My Greatest Friend’s Exorcism By Grady Hendrix

To be fair, Abby and Gretchen’s friendship is meant to be the theme of this story as much as the actual exorcism itself. I really loved this factor of the e-book, reading in regards to the how the two ladies met at a curler skating rink and the greatest way they bonded over a shared love of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, teen magazine quizzes, and Phil Collins songs.

Like Ernest Clines’ good Ready Player One, we are in a position to also chill with some 80s trivia as all of the chapter headings are 80s songs. Anyway, those minor quibbles apart, I loved My Best Friend’s Exorcism fairly a bit. I’ll be studying more of Grady Hendrix’s fiction. i favored so many things in this book – it gets a hundred stars for design. i really like the duvet of the paperback, however sadly it doesn’t embrace all of the yearbook signatures of the hardcover, of which i notably like abby’s, whose P.S. means one thing before you learn the guide and one rather more particular thing after, and is the part that made me get as close to emotional as i can when reading.

It works I suppose for YA horror, and is entertaining in a cursory method, but it didn’t have compelling sufficient moments to make it really memorable like different great horror examples from that period. As great as I discovered the nostalgia and the humor, I was a bit let down by the precise horror. I do not know if I’ve simply become jaded by years spent as a horror fan, but except for one or two really disturbing scenes I discovered little or no of it truly scary. Back to the book, as a lifelong fan of horror movies, I remember many an evening spent as a kid watching my favorite horror films from that decade many times. In many ways, this e-book transported me again to these days where I discovered horror for the first time, and for that I’m incredibly grateful for it. This was such a novel mix of 80s movie nostalgia, comedy and horror film tropes. Grady Hendrix’s My Best Friend’s Exorcism is nothing if not a wonderful ode to all that made horror of the late 80s and early 90s so great.

It’s right here that he makes a determined ploy to keep his good friend fascinated, by stripping naked and going skinny-dipping. Ellen comes by to confront Vlad, just for him to counter her anger by asking her out. Surprisingly, she accepts, confusing Michael who thought that they had the upper hand. Another basic trope of the “gay greatest friend” is to be the one who should “talk sense” to the female lead. This was the entire idea behind the popular Sassy Gay Friend YouTube series from over a decade ago. However, nearly instantaneously Michael shrugs and joins them in the water.

I suppose ask that aloud for a simple (or is it simply groan-worthy?) snicker, however part of the success of Hendrix’s My Best Friend’s Exorcism is that it stubbornly refuses to lock itself into one distinct genre or thought. Even with that laundry record I suppose I still missed one thing Abby and Gretchen have been best pals since grade faculty. Things go wrong at a high school party when the women were doing a few drugs.

The nasty rich youngsters made me realize why I’m glad I’m not in highschool anymore. I mean, it’s genius stage storytelling for my part. Sure, my 12 12 months old isn’t going to really feel it like my husband and I do, however he relates as a kid–kids don’t change. All the characters in this guide have been properly developed and simple to narrate to for anyone who remembers what it’s wish to be a pre-teen/teenager. i’d supposed to only learn horror books for october, regardless of the temptation of a quantity of non-horror books side-eyeing me wantonly from the stacks. and yet i feel like i have already inadvertently failed on this aim by reading this one, as a result of i wouldn’t really classify it as “horror.” except you are extraordinarily spooked out by teengirl squabbles. which might be a legit phobia with a flowery name, however i don’t know what it is.

Make no mistake, that is camp horror at its most interesting. It’s like The Exorcist and the Scary Movie franchise had a child, and My Best Friend’s Exorcism is the resultant child. I discovered myself laughing way more than I anticipated, and at humorous jokes that I felt had been rather well developed and conveyed.
